Saints & Strangers
Saints & Strangers is a novel that delves beyond the well-known historical accounts of Thanksgiving and the founding of Plymouth Plantation, depicting the struggles and sorrows of the 102 men, women, and children who embarked on a rented ship to a place they had never seen. Half of them are pilgrims or saints, religious separatists who gave up their previous lives for a single cause: religious liberty. The other half, known as strangers, were mercantile adventurers with fewer spiritual goals and more materialistic ones. This mismatch of values caused the group to struggle internally as they attempted to build a new colony, which was exacerbated by a tense relationship with the neighboring Native American tribes. Conflicting allegiances among various communities resulted in assimilation, faith, and compromise trials that continue to characterize our country today.
