The Mayo Clinic, Faith, Hope and Science
The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science tells the story of a one-of-a-kind medical institution that has been referred to as a "Medical Mecca," the "Supreme Court of Medicine," and the "place for hope where there is no hope." After a devastating tornado in rural Minnesota in 1883, the Sisters of Saint Francis and a country doctor named William Worrall Mayo formed an unlikely partnership. It has since expanded to treat over a million patients per year from all 50 states and 150 countries. Dr. Mayo taught his sons, Will and Charlie, a simple philosophy: "the needs of the patient come first." They would not treat diseases, but rather individuals. In a world where healthcare is typically fragmented among individual specialties, the Mayo Clinic employs a multi-specialty, team-based approach that has fostered a culture of collaboration since its inception.
